A mother of three young children, Nicole Connelly decided in 2008 to switch careers, go back to school, and pursue her goal of becoming a registered nurse (RN). She took her prerequisite courses part-time in the evening and then enrolled in a full-time nursing program, where she received her associate’s degree and subsequently obtained her registered nurse (RN) licensure.
Previously, Nicole, who also has an associate’s degree in business/accounting, had worked as the general manager of a billiard parlor, but she was drawn to health care and nursing in particular. Her father had suffered from a long illness, and Nicole took care of him throughout his hospice care. In addition, just one month into her nursing training, Nicole delivered one of her sister’s twin babies who decided to come into the world prematurely at her sister’s home (the other twin was born the next day in the hospital).
As a nursing student, Nicole did her clinical rotation at Newton-Wellesley Hospital (NWH), and she was recognized as someone who was dedicated, hard-working and an excellent caregiver.
“An employee at the hospital told me about the amazing opportunities at NWH,” Nicole said. “He suggested that I take a position as a Patient Care Assistant (PCA) to gain more experience, and then, when I became an RN, I could apply for a position in the NWH New Graduate Nursing Program, which offers even more training.”
Nicole followed that employee’s advice, and, while attending nursing school, she worked as a PCA at the hospital. In addition, after becoming an RN, she was accepted into the New Graduate Nursing Program. This program offers classroom training on computer programs, policies and procedures, etc., as well as clinical training on a floor in the hospital. The New Graduate Nursing Program is one of our workforce programs designed to help employees develop and grow in their careers.
After the initial six weeks of the program, the new nurse is paired with a preceptor on the floor. Preceptors at NWH are experienced RNs who are interested in working with and mentoring new nurses. To monitor progress, weekly meetings take place that include the new nurse, nurse manager, preceptor, and nurse educator.
Nicole’s future goals and aspirations are to continue her education and take advantage of the training opportunities that NWH has to offer. She also plans to pursue a bachelor’s degree and master’s degree in nursing.
