Chair of Surgery at Newton Wellesley Hospital, with a focus in Endocrine Surgery
Dr. Parangi is dedicated to personalized care of patients with thyroid disease, including thyroid cancer and hyperparathyroidism. She focuses her clinical efforts on endocrine surgery and applies her basic science knowledge and expertise to tumor progression in thyroid cancer. She is one of a handful of thyroid surgeons with expertise in molecular biology and has over 100 publications, many on thyroid cancer therapeutics and the latest in imaging and treatment of hyperparathyroidism in premier journals. She has been a council member for the most prestigious organization of endocrine surgeons in the US, The American Association of Endocrine Surgeons, and a member of American Association of Clinical Endocrinologist and The American Thyroid Association. She has won numerous awards for her research on understanding the role of the BRAF oncoprotein, why some patients with thyroid cancer do worse than others and how to help them. Her work in thyroid cancer details certain key genetic changes seen more frequently in those who do poorly, to help elucidate the role of these genetic changes in the aggressive behavior of those cancers. This important research effort focuses on clarifying the molecular mechanism of thyroid cancer invasion and understanding the process of disease progression in patients with thyroid cancer.
Dr. Stephen received her medical degree from Harvard Medical School and subsequently completed her general surgical residency at the Massachusetts General Hospital and an endocrine surgical fellowship at the Cleveland Clinic. Her clinical practice is focused on the surgical management of patients with endocrine tumors. Her particular areas of clinical expertise are in minimally-invasive parathyroid surgery, the treatment of thyroid cancer, and laparoscopic adrenal surgery. She also performs in-office ultrasound and ultrasound-guided biopsies of thyroid nodules and parathyroid tumors.
Dr. Rajshri Gartland s a board-certified, fellowship-trained thyroid and parathyroid surgeon, and has additional expertise in innovative techniques such as thyroid radiofrequency ablation. She serves as surgical director of the NWH Thyroid Biopsy Clinic and directs the MGH Minimally Invasive Thyroid Therapeutics Program.
