A cystoscopy is when your doctor introduces a tubular lighted telescopic lens into the urethra and bladder. This allows the doctor to look inside of your bladder and even biopsy tissue if needed for further evaluation.
You may feel somewhat dizzy or sleepy after surgery due to the side effects of the anesthesia. General or Intravenous anesthesia agents can remain in your body for up to 24 hours. It is advised not to operate heavy machinery, drive a motor vehicle, consume alcohol, or make any important business decisions. Try to rest for the remainder of the day.
You may experience some burning and frequency with urination. You may also notice that your urine looks pink in color. This is because there is some blood in your urine. This should go away within 48 hours after the procedure. You should try to urinate whenever you feel the urge. Do not try to hold off from urinating because old blood in the bladder can form a clot and cause a potential obstruction leading to increase bladder pressure.
You may resume your regular diet. It is very important to drink six to eight glasses of liquid each day. The best fluid is water and /or juices. Try to limit the amount of caffeine products you take in. The extra fluid will help to flush the bladder.
Rest for the remainder of the day. Slowly start to resume activity and rest when needed. Avoid heavy lifting for two weeks if your cystoscopy required a biopsy. Wait to have sex until you talk to your doctor at your follow up appointment. This allows time for you to heal.
Your doctor may have given you medication. Please take as advised and notify your doctor if your skin is itchy, swollen or has a rash. This may mean you’re allergic to the medicine prescribed.
