Newton-Wellesley Hospital has a long-standing, ongoing research partnership with Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) scientists and engineers to develop new approaches for diagnosing and treating conditions such as endometriosis and adenomyosis through our co-administered MIT Center for Gynepathology Research.
The scientific director of the MIT Center for Gynepathology Research is Linda G. Griffith, PhD, Professor of Biological and Mechanical Engineering at MIT, and the clinical director is Keith B. Isaacson, MD. Current studies are providing new insights in endometriosis through tissue engineering and systems biology.

In collaboration with biologists and clinicians, the MIT Center for Gynepathology Research brings new frontiers of engineering to bear on understanding the basic biology, physiology, and pathophysiology of the female reproductive tract. Research efforts focus on developing new technologies for the diagnosis and treatment of diseases and conditions such as endometriosis and adenomyosis, as well as fostering liaisons with industry.
Together, NWH clinicians and MIT scientists and engineers published the first studies describing how endometriosis patients are categorized based on inflammation levels. They also developed an award-winning model of the human endometrium. Currently, NWH and MIT are collaborating to find personalized medicine approaches to treating complex gynecology diseases. They are working to train the next generation of engineers, scientists, and clinicians with the goal of finding effective therapies that preserve fertility and eliminate symptoms for patients. Additional initiatives of the MIT Center for Gynepathology Research include participating in numerous educational events for women at MIT and the greater Boston area.
Current clinical studies involve patients who are undergoing surgery or other treatments for gynecological problems or infertility at Newton-Wellesley Hospital. Additional patients for this research are being recruited by clinical collaborators in Norway, Brazil, and Singapore, as well as at Tufts University.
