Roger L. Greiger, MD Medical Director
Our two inpatient units include 45 beds and provide acute care for adults with active psychiatric conditions. When needed, psychiatric hospitalization provides a safe environment for intensive assessment and treatment, including medications and other therapies. All admitted patients have an attending psychiatrist who works with the patient to develop an appropriate treatment plan. Being part of a general medical hospital, patients also have access to consultants from other specialties, such as Medicine and Neurology, when needed.
While in the hospital, patients work with a multidisciplinary team that includes psychiatric nurses, mental health counselors, social workers, and occupational therapists.
Maureen H. Lavelle, LICSW Director of Social Work
The inpatient psychiatry unit has five social workers, all of whom are independently licensed and bring a wealth of knowledge and expertise to their role. Each patient on the unit is assigned to a social worker. The social worker works from a strength-based approach. The social worker coordinates care with the outpatient treatment team and family members, and may hold family meetings if indicated during the admission. The social worker also encourages the patient to take an active role in participating in the discharge planning process.
Jess Rolanti, OT Chief Occupational Therapist
Admitted patients meet with occupational and recreational therapists to develop a treatment plan to develop and practice coping skills that promote healthy lifestyle and routine, self-care and more positive thinking. Attention is individualized to address specific areas of concern, such as recovery for addictions, support for changing self-harming behaviors and safety assessments for discharge planning.
A 7-days-per-week group-based treatment program encourages active learning and practice of skills. The group program incorporates a range of group offerings to ensure that the needs of those hospitalized will be met. The daily groups offer a variety of psychoeducational, activity-based, creative-expressive and exercise classes. Group topics include goal-setting, CBT and DBT skills, relapse prevention, stress management, relaxation techniques, sensory exploration, communication and social skills, leisure management, and health and wellness education. Treatment provided is evidence-based and geared towards symptom reduction and stabilization.
Daily substance use groups allow patients to address the pros/cons of their substance use, recognize their readiness to change, identify triggers, learn about cravings, and discover strategies to identify/manage cravings. Patients will personally prepare a solid relapse prevention plan suited to them which they can implement once discharged. Small group discussions provide peer-to-peer support in a safe, relaxed environment.
