In the outpatient clinic, we treat patients from preschool age through adolescence for a variety of issues. Our interdisciplinary team includes child psychiatrists, child psychologists, nurse practitioners, and social workers.
Treatment in the clinic begins with a thorough evaluation, including a detailed review of your child’s medical and psychiatric history. Often, the clinician assessing your child will request your permission to speak with important people in your child’s life, such as their pediatrician, a teacher or a therapist.
After the initial evaluation, recommendations for an initial treatment plan will be discussed with you and your child. This plan will be tailored to your child’s specific needs and may include medication recommendations, additional medical or psychological testing, referrals to group, individual or family therapy, and parent guidance. While some children benefit from a short-term consultation with our staff, those who require ongoing psychiatric care can continue to receive treatment in the clinic until age 18.
While most of our outpatient services are conducted remotely via virtual visits, we are able to see some patients in person. Our clinic is in the main hospital building, across from the 3 South elevators.

Our clinicians provide specialized mental health evaluation, treatment and support to pediatric patients who have been admitted to Newton-Wellesley Hospital for a medical condition. We also complete crisis evaluations for children and adolescents who present to the Newton-Wellesley Emergency Department for a psychiatric emergency.
The Pappas PACT Program at Newton-Wellesley Hospital provides guidance for parents faced with the challenge of raising children while undergoing cancer treatment. This program - run in the Mass General Cancer Center at Newton-Wellesley - helps parents who are concerned about the impact that their diagnosis and treatment will have on their children. For more information, visit the program’s website at www.nwh.org/pact.
Parents of patients in our clinic are encouraged to attend at least 3 sessions with one of our parent guidance experts. These sessions are designed to support parents and help them gain knowledge, skills, and understanding of their child’s emotional or behavioral struggles. Children do not attend these sessions so that parents can have an opportunity to speak candidly and openly.
Our “Raising Resilient Teens” and “Raising Resilient Kids” workshops are seven-week skills-based groups for parents that we offer throughout the year. The workshops provide education on normative child development and different ways parents can foster the parent-child relationship and support resilience-building in their kids and teens.
"Raising Resilient Kids" is designed for parents and caregivers of school-aged children (grades K-5/6), while "Raising Resilient Teens" is designed for parents and caregivers of tweens and teens. The total cost of the 7-week workshop is $160 and covers up to 2 parents/caregivers per household. Email NWHResilienceproject@partners.org with any questions.
