Below is additional information about spine CT scans to help you understand what to expect from the exam.
Department of Radiology, Newton Wellesley Hospital 2014 Washington Street Newton, MA 02462 Phone: 617-243-6600
To prepare for the exam, please arrive 20 minutes before your appointment time, and wear comfortable clothing that contains no metal. If your cervical spine is being scanned, please don’t wear a necklace, and remove all your earrings and facial jewelry. If you’ve had plain X-rays or other exams near your spine, please bring the images with you if they were done at another facility. If there is any possibility that you are pregnant or nursing a baby, please speak with your referring doctor before your appointment.
When you’re having a cervical spine scan, we position you on your back with your head in either a special holder or on a small cushion, and you will enter the scanner head first. The table will move in and out of the large circle and the images will be taken. If you’re having a thoracic or lumbar spine scan, you’re positioned on your back with your arms raised over your head and will enter the scanner feet first. The table will move in and out of the large circle as the images are being taken. There may be some breathing instructions during the scan, which the technologist will review with your beforehand. The scan typically takes 10 to 20 minutes, depending on the complexity of your exam.
After the exam, the technologist will process your images. Then a radiologist will evaluate the images, dictate a report within 24 hours, and send a transcription of the report to your doctor, who will explain the results to you.
