An abdominal ultrasound uses high-frequency sound waves to create pictures of the organs and structures inside your abdomen, or belly. We use an abdominal ultrasound to:
Department of Radiology, Newton-Wellesley Hospital 2014 Washington Street Newton, MA 02462 Phone: 617-243-6600
You may not have anything to eat or drink after midnight if you are having an abdominal ultrasound. For infants and children younger than 2, withhold feeding two hours before their exam time.
Your sonographer will apply a warm gel to your skin over the area we’re examining. The gel maximizes contact on your skin and helps produce high-quality images. The sonographer then moves a device called a transducer over the exam area to create the ultrasound images. When the exam is over, the sonographer will wipe off the gel.
Most exams take approximately 30 minutes. Some specialty exams take 45 minutes to one hour.
You can resume your normal activities without any restrictions. A radiologist will review and interpret your ultrasound images, and we’ll send a report to your referring doctor.
You will receive the results of your abdominal ultrasound from your referring doctor.
