An amniocentesis is a procedure in which we take a small sample of amniotic fluid surrounding your fetus. This involves inserting a needle through the uterine wall, which we do with ultrasound guidance. We perform this procedure to obtain genetic information about your fetus.
Department of Radiology, Newton-Wellesley Hospital 2014 Washington Street Newton, MA 02462 Phone: 617-243-6600
There is no special preparation for an amniocentesis.
You will lie down on a table for the exam, and the sonographer will put a warm gel on your belly. The gel is water-based and will not stain your clothing. The gel maximizes contact between the skin and helps produce high-quality images.
The sonographer will move the transducer on your belly and evaluate your pregnancy. When the exam is over, the sonographer will wipe off the gel. We’ll identify a safe site for the amniocentesis using ultrasound. The doctor will clean your belly and insert a needle into your uterus. The doctor will remove the needle when enough fluid has been removed.
Your amniocentesis will take approximately 15 minutes. It may take up to an hour if we also perform an ultrasound for a complete fetal survey.
Amniocentesis results are usually available in 10 to 14 days. Your doctor’s office will notify you of the results as soon as they are available.
