A VCUG (voiding cystourethrogram) is an X-ray study that we view on a monitor in real time. During this test, we use a thin, flexible tube called a urinary catheter to fill your bladder with contrast dye. This dye lets us better see various structures inside your body, including the:
Your referring doctor may order a VCUG to evaluate these structures for possible medical conditions, such as vesicoureteral reflux, in which urine flows backward from the bladder into the ureters or kidneys.
Department of Radiology, Newton-Wellesley Hospital 2014 Washington Street Newton, MA 02462 Phone: 617-243-6600
You should be well-hydrated before your VCUG. We may ask you to empty your bladder before the test. Just before your test, you will need to remove your clothing so we can place your urinary catheter.
The radiologist will ask you about your medical history, including any medication allergies and medications you currently take. You will lie on an X-ray table, and a nurse or radiologist will clean your genital area before inserting a urinary catheter. Next, we will fill your bladder with contrast dye through the catheter.
During this process, we will take X-ray pictures to measure changes in your bladder size and fluid flow. Once we have filled your bladder, we will remove the catheter, and we will take more X-ray pictures as you urinate into a bedpan.
A VCUG typically takes 30 to 40 minutes, depending on how much fluid your bladder holds.
