To test whether you have lung cancer, we use a low-dose CT scan to take images of your lungs. The exam is performed by specially trained technologists and then interpreted by a board certified radiologist who looks for early signs of cancer.
The lung cancer screening program at Newton-Wellesley Hospital is nationally accredited by the American College of Radiology (ACR) and run by a team of specialists across multiple specialties, including:

Lung cancer is most treatable when it is identified in its earliest stages, so lung cancer screening ideally should take place before you experience any signs or symptoms of lung cancer.
You may be a good candidate for lung cancer screening and should speak to your doctor, even if you are not experiencing symptoms. Candidates must meet all of the following critera:
*Age range may include patients up to 80, depending upon insurance and hospital system. Please check with your insurance and consult your physician with any questions.
**Medicare and Medicaid as well as some private insurers currently only cover age 55-77 and 30-plus pack year patients.
If you’re a candidate for lung cancer screening, you can have an exam ordered by speaking to your doctor and determining that it’s right for you. After receiving the screening, a radiologist will read the scan and inform your provider of the results and any recommendations, which then will be relayed to you.
As of January 2015, most payers reimburse for this screening if you meet the eligibility criteria. Make sure to speak with your provider if you have any questions about your coverage and also check with your insurance company. Prior approval or pre-certification may be required.
