A thyroid uptake and scan shows the size, shape, and location of your thyroid scan. The “uptake” portion of the exam measures how well your thyroid functions.
Department of Radiology, Newton-Wellesley Hospital 2014 Washington Street Newton, MA 02462 Phone: 617-243-6600
There is no preparation for this exam. However, at the time that your exam is scheduled, you will be asked the following questions:
Are you taking medications? You should not be taking any thyroid hormones or any thyrosuppressive drugs, such as propylthiouracil (PTU). Please speak with your referring doctor or call our Nuclear Medicine Department at 617-243-6087 if you have any questions.
Have you had any recent X-ray procedures? X-rays using contrast media (pills or injections) will interfere with this exam. If you have received any contrast media within the last three months, please speak with your referring doctor, or call our scheduling department at 617-243-6800 prior to your appointment.
Important: If you are nursing a baby, or if there is any possibility that you could be pregnant, please speak with your referring doctor before your scheduled appointment.
This is a two-day procedure.
Day one: We will ask you questions regarding any prior tests, medication, symptoms, or family history of thyroid problems. We then will give you one or two capsules containing radioactive iodine that will accumulate in your thyroid. This is inorganic iodine and will not cause reactions as those sometimes experienced with the contrast used in X-ray procedures. After receiving the pills, you may continue to eat and drink anything you please.
Day two: There is no prep for the scan. You will lie comfortably on a scanning table while we take pictures of your thyroid.
On the first day, the process takes 15 minutes. On the second day, the scan takes 30 minutes.
After the exam, the technologist will process your images using a computer. A radiologist will evaluate the images within 24 hours and dictate a report. Your referring doctor will receive a copy of this report.
You will get the results of the exam from your referring doctor.
