Department of Radiology, Newton Wellesley Hospital 2014 Washington Street Newton, MA 02462 Phone: 617-243-6600
To prepare for the exam, please arrive 20 minutes before your appointment and remove any earrings or facial jewelry.
If there is any possibility that you are pregnant or nursing a baby, please speak with your referring doctor physician before your appointment.
Depending on the reason for your exam, you may have contract injected into your arm through an IV. During the exam, you will lie on your back with your arms in a comfortable position. Your head will be placed in a special holder that keeps your head still during the exam. Once the exam has started, the table will rise up and move in and out of a large circle. If you are receiving an injection of contrast, the technologist will cover some specific medical history questions with you before the scan begins. Then a few images are taken so the technologist can set up the area to be scanned. For patients that receive a contrast injection, the technologist will stay with you for the injection and a delay of five to 10 minutes will elapse before the scan begins. The procedure typically takes 10 to 30 minutes, depending on its complexity.
You will have your IV removed and be sent home shortly after completing the exam. In some cases, such as if you experienced head trauma, the radiologist must review your exam before you’re released. A technologist will process your images. Then a radiologist will evaluate the images, dictate a report within 24 hours, and send a transcription to your doctor, who will explain the results to you.
