A pelvic ultrasound allows us to see the bladder and the pelvic organs. In females, the uterus, ovaries, and other pelvic structures are evaluated. In males, ultrasound can evaluate the prostate gland. The kidneys are also examined.
Department of Radiology, Newton-Wellesley Hospital 2014 Washington Street Newton, MA 02462 Phone: 617-243-6600
Patients 18 and younger will need to have a full bladder for the exam to allow visualization of the pelvic organs. Your child will need to empty his or her bladder one hour prior to the exam and drink 24 ounces (four glasses) of water without emptying the bladder again before the exam.
For adults 18 and older, there is no special preparation needed for this exam.
You will lie down on a table for the exam, and the sonographer will put a warm gel on your belly. The gel is water-based and will not stain your clothing. The gel maximizes contact between the skin and helps produce high-quality images. The sonographer will then move a transducer over the pelvic area in order to obtain the necessary images. When the exam is over, the sonographer will wipe off the gel.
In most women, we’ll also perform a transvaginal ultrasound. This procedure is similar to an internal exam that is performed at your doctor’s office and is performed after emptying your bladder. A specially designed disinfected transducer will be inserted into your vagina, which allows for better visualization of your pelvic organs.
The entire exam can take up to 30 minutes.
After the exam, the technologist will process your images using a computer. A radiologist will evaluate the images within 24 hours and dictate a report. We’ll send that report to your referring doctor.
You will get the results of the exam from your referring doctor.
