We perform the 131-iodine diagnostic scan following the diagnosis and surgical treatment of papillary or follicular thyroid carcinoma, a type of thyroid cancer. During this test, we take images are taken of your whole body, front and back, with the help of radioactive iodine. This lets us see if there is any recurrence of thyroid cancer in the body after your thyroid has been removed.

If you’re a woman of childbearing age (13 to 50), you will need to have a pregnancy test before you receive radioactive iodine. Patients must be off all thyroid medication for an adequate period of time, and your doctor will discuss this with you.
Day one: You will receive a capsule of radioactive iodine.
Day two or three: You will return for the whole body scan 48 to 72 hours after receiving the radioactive capsule. We will take pictures of you from head to toe. You will lie comfortably on a scanning table during the test.
The first day of the procedure will take about 15 minutes. The second day will take about two to three hours.
The radiologist will interpret your images and forward a report to your referring doctor.
