A fetal ultrasound allows to see your fetus, uterus, and ovaries. Ultrasound allows us to get a great deal of information during a fetal ultrasound, including:
We can perform a fetal ultrasound safely from as early as five weeks of pregnancy and onward.
Department of Radiology, Newton-Wellesley Hospital 2014 Washington Street Newton, MA 02462 Phone: 617-243-6600
There is no special preparation for a fetal ultrasound.
You will lie down on a table for the exam, and the sonographer will put a warm gel on your belly. The gel is water-based and will not stain your clothing. The gel maximizes contact between the skin and helps produce high-quality images. The sonographer will then move a transducer over the abdomen in order to obtain the necessary images. When the exam is over, the sonographer will wipe off the gel.
If you are less than 12 weeks pregnant, you will need to have a vaginal ultrasound performed. This procedure is similar to an internal exam that is performed at your doctor’s office and is performed after emptying your bladder. A specially designed disinfected transducer will be inserted into your vagina, which allows better visualization of your pelvic organs.
The entire exam can take up to an hour.
After the exam, the technologist will process your images using a computer. A radiologist will evaluate the images within 24 hours and dictate a report. We’ll send that report to your referring doctor.
You will get the results of the exam from your referring doctor.
