An arthrogram is a real-time X-ray study in which a radiologist injects contrast dye into a joint of the body and acquires images of the joint. We usually perform an arthrogram on one of the following joints:
We often refer patients for a CT scan or MRI scan after an arthrogram for additional images.
Department of Radiology, Newton-Wellesley Hospital 2014 Washington Street Newton, MA 02462 Phone: 617-243-6600
There are no special instructions for an arthrogram. You should wear clothing that allows for easy access to the joint we’re examining. We may ask you to change your clothes for the exam.
The radiologist will ask you for a brief medical history that pertains to the study. You will lie on a special X-ray table that allows for real-time imaging. The radiologist will clean the area of the joint with an antiseptic solution and, under X-ray guidance, insert a small needle into the joint cavity.
After ensuring that the needle is in the correct place, the radiologist will inject a small amount of contrast dye that will allow us to get better X-ray images of the joint. We will remove the needle, and we may ask you to exercise the joint. We will take X-ray images of the joint. In most cases, you then will go for additional CT or MRI images.
Your arthrogram will take approximately 45 minutes. You should plan for additional time if you need a CT or MRI scan after your arthrogram.
